Facebook has banned news content from being shared on its service in Australia.
Result
Traffic dropped for Australian news sites after the ban was initiated. Stephen Scheeler, former CEO of Facebook in Australia and New Zealand, said people should delete the app in protest of the new policy.
Reaction
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison criticized the shutdown and said he considered the action a “threat” from Facebook: “The idea of shutting down the sorts of sites they did yesterday, as some sort of threat — well, I know how Australians react to that and I thought that was not a good move on their part.” He called for an end to the ban.
